Emily Hastings
Emily Hastings, a 15 year-old sophomore at Conifer High School, is like most teenagers; anxious to begin driving. Emily’s parents were adamant that she attend the Alive at 25 defensive driving class sponsored by the Colorado State Patrol and the Caitlyn Craig Foundation. Emily’s family banks at Colorado Credit Union, which reimburses members the $30 tuition they pay for their kids to voluntarily enroll in Alive at 25. After giving up half of a Saturday to complete the class she said, “It was good. I’m glad I took it but I’m a little afraid to start driving.” If driving is like any other activity that Emily has taken on, she’ll be proficient and a role model for other youthful drivers.
Emily began playing tennis at age six through the Ken-Caryl Ranch tennis program and now plays high school varsity tennis. She ended her freshman year with only one loss as a varsity player and finished fourth at regionals in a very tough division.
The Colorado native concentrates her efforts in A.P. classes and is on track for a career in forensic science with genetics, anatomy and physiology on her busy academic schedule next year. With a 3.5 G.P.A., Emily has also been a Girl Scout and an active volunteer with the Mountain Resource Center and St. Laurence Episcopal Church in Conifer as well as organizing a fundraising event on her own, to help a Ken-Caryl Ranch family whose son recently lost his battle to cancer.
A certified advanced swimmer, Emily was swimming before she could walk and honed her talents through the Ken-Caryl aquatics program. In addition to swimming and playing tennis, Emily began participating in dance and gymnastics at the age of three, followed by soccer which she played for many years as a mid-fielder and goalie. Last fall she played on the Conifer High School girls’ softball team.
Emily's interests also include photography and music. Her award-winning photography was purchased by Jefferson County Public Schools and is on permanent display in the administrative offices of a local middle school. She began playing the viola at age 11 and earned "exemplary" ratings during competitions with her school orchestra.
Kudos to Emily Hastings who loves to shop for music, clothing and shoes, but admits she finds it much more rewarding to see her savings grow!
